We got a couple of requests from dancers who had trouble meeting the deadline, and in contra's spirit of inclusion, we're offering the same extra time to all.

Contra dancing is a social dance. Contra is purely for fun and not for competition or performance. It requires no experience and focuses on community, making friends and dancing to live music. You don't need to bring a partner – part of the tradition is switching partners for each dance! A caller teaches each dance, so no lessons are needed; just show up and have fun!

We dance Tuesday nights, 7:45 – 10:00 pm ET at Riolo Dance, 502 N. Capitol Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46204
There's no smoking or drinking, and anyone's welcome to dance together, regardless of age, experience, gender, preference for dogs or cats, etc.
Best casino wins. Parking: There is free parking in the raised lot adjacent to Riolo Dance. Access the lot via Roanoke St. Viva las vegas slot machine.
We provide a brief new dancer intro / refresher / warm-up starting at 7:45, with dancing for everybody 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.
We're on Eastern Time. Online calendars compensate for time zones, so if you see 6:45 – 9:00 pm., your computer is on Central.
Please:
- Bring a water bottle.
- Wear casual, light-weight clothes (skirt or shorts/slacks, and an extra shirt if you sweat a lot).
- Bring clean, comfortable shoes.
- Attend (and bring friends to) the brief intro at 7:30. If we have no new dancers, use the time to socialize, share tips, & techniques.
- Listen to the caller and the music, and watch the other dancers. The caller will tell you what to do, and the dancers will show you. Almost everybody learns contra from dancing, not lessons, videos, books, or instructions on websites, but dance communities have a few tips here, and here.
Admission Tuesdaysis generally $9, $7/members, $5/under 25, free for ages 13 and under. When the band and/or caller travel more than an hour we ask for $1 more to help cover their extra costs. Sunday afternoon dances are $10 (25 & up), $5 (14 – 24), or free (13 & under).
All events are 'more if you can, less if you can't;' we won't turn away people who need to pay less than the stated cost (and won't refuse extra money from those who want to contribute). We offer free admission to those who help with several tasks like setup & cleanup; please talk to any board member if you can help!
